I can’t believe we’ve been in 2025 for almost a week now. While it seems like only yesterday we were starting off 2024, the time has come to reflect on 2024 and look ahead to what 2025 will have to offer. But before I go into that, I figured I need to do one more monthly reading recap before I can reflect on my reading as a whole in 2024.
December was honestly kind of a hectic month for me. Between the holidays and CYBILS Awards judging, I had a lot going on in the past month. Nevertheless, I’m still proud of the progress and reading I’ve done in December and I can’t wait to share with you what my month of reading looked like.
Reading Stats
Starting off with the numbers for my reading recap, I read…
20 books
4,4475 pages
466,716 words
As for what kinds of books I read in December, pretty much ¾ of the books I read in the past month were graphic novels and almost all of them were because of CYBILS Awards judging. These books all kind of stayed within the same genre as most of them were either contemporary fiction or graphic memoirs. However, there were occasional variations diving into historical fiction and fantasy.
So, for the five books I read in December that weren’t graphic novels, it was pretty much two romances, one contemporary novel, one historical fiction novel, and one horror novel.
CYBILS Awards Judging
December was like the final countdown as it was around the time where we had to pick out the seven finalists in the two subcategories the panel and I are responsible for judging to advance to the final round in January. While there were some nominees that I would’ve liked to spend some time reading, there simply just wasn’t enough time. However, at least with my job with the CYBILS now done for this award season, I can come back to them.
Additionally, as a panel, we try to have every member read the books that do get selected as finalists and that ultimately played a role in the graphic novels I read that month.
Queer Lit Readathon: Round 14
The only other major thing I had going on in terms of reading during the month of December, the TBR that I initially set out for this readathon was not the same as the books I did end up reading for Round 14.
Now, I was able to get some of the books on my TBR for this readathon. My library hold on Rabbit Chase by Elizabeth LaPensée came in time for the readathon and I was able to knock out three of the prompts with it. Additionally, while it was not in my TBR post, I also did manage to read Holler by Denali Sai Nalamalapu and got that to fulfill another three prompts. Yet, that’s where my initial TBR kind of stopped.
As for what I did read for Round 14 of the Queer Lit Readathon (besides the two books from my initial TBR), the only other book I read was Navigating with You by Jeremy Whitley. It was one of the books that I needed to read for CYBILS and it actually got quite a number of prompts I was able to check off.
Epilogue
Pretty much I covered everything that was of importance during my reading last month. I’m proud that I was able to read that many books despite all the busyness going on in my life and I feel like this was a nice way to wrap up 2024.
Be sure to check out my 2024 Reading Wrap-Up post later this week where I’ve dive into all my reading stats, my favorites books from each month of the year, and some fun book superlatives along the way.
